The famous cable cars |
Looking through some old photos on the computer we came across our pictures from a trip to San Francisco we took last year. Even though it was before we had Let's Split we want to take a minute and give SanFran some love here on the blog. The trip was not one we'll ever forget and the city so fantastic that we've decided to take you back to the winter of 2011 to share our 5 day road trip!
With only a few days off work and a weekend in between, we got in the car and decided to head south for a road trip. We didn't pick a destination, didn't have much of a plan, all we knew was that the gray rainy skies and cold winter days were getting to us and if the sun wasn't going to come out, then we were going to drive south and find it!
As we started down the I5 (the trusty interstate highway that links our dear Canada-USA border with all the important West Coast cities...you know - Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego...etc. ) We passed Seattle without thinking twice, still gray skies and we had explored its secrets a few times already, and continued driving. Up next was Portland - a destination that I'd had my set on for a while, but my sales pitch of no-tax shopping and micro-breweries to Ivan didn't outweigh our goal of sunshine. Sadly, Portland was still sun-less. As we headed further south, the exits going down in numbers, the draw of entering California grew irresistible....Ivan had never been to the golden state, and I hadn't been back since my early teens, so we picked a coastal town right on the Oregon-Cali border ->Crescent City. That's where we were headed, it was decided.
....Until the road signs started displaying distances to San Francisco....
The closer we got to Crescent City, the lower the kms to SanFran were.....we'd already gone 1,000kms, what was another 400km? It wasn't a hard decision, it never usually is for the two of us. We love and live for traveling...it's never a choice on where to go, just how quickly we can get there! The how far, the how long of a drive, the how many connections are merely an after-thought, besides the journey and a LET'S GO attitude is half the fun of traveling, no?

After our quick road trip to somewhere south-ener and sunn-ier turned into a 14hr drive straight to the epic city of San Francisco, we started exploring as soon as we drove over the bridge entered its city limits! Driving over the Golden Gate, exploring China Town, lunching on local & fresh clam chowder at Fisherman's Warf with views of Alcatraz in the background...walking up and driving down Lombard street with its hills & curves, admiring the Painted Ladies and taking in the '70s vibe and colourful art on Haight Street....not to mention the international restaurants, pubs and nightlife. Our 2 day stay was hardly enough to explore the city and if you're heading there make sure to give yourself atleast 5-7days. It's an incredible city with so much to offer it truly deserves as much time as your vacation schedule will allow!
As if that wasn't enough, we decided to drive up the scenic Oregon Coast on our way home! And yes, we did stop in the coveted Crescent City on our way home.
We were so busy running around the city and taking in as much of everything as possible on our short stay in SanFran that these pictures truly don't do it justice. But they'll have to do for now...until the urge strikes to head back to sunny California!

Did you visit Alcatraz?
Hi Jaksa!
We unfortunately didn't have enough time to do the tour - it takes 4-6hrs and we were only in SanFran for a few days. It's definitely on the list for our next visit there!
