VECERA.

There's a little custom here, and throughout most of southern&eastern Europe, that the main meal (rucak) is eaten between 12:30-2:30 during the day.  This would be the equivalent to our North American dinner.  The main meal starts with soup&bread, a main course with a few sides and usually something sweet to follow.

In the eve (anywhere from 8-11pm) when the family finally gathers from the day's activities, everyone sits down to a light meal - vecera.  This is usually crepes, or a platter of cheese&meats, sometimes the day's leftovers from rucak, some fresh bread with jams&spreads etc.

Last night I took responsibility to make this little vecera my own experiment.  If you can remember one of our absolute.favourite.things.to.eat (and any of our friends & family in Vancouver can attest to this) is sushi.  Just see one of our first posts here.  So I hunted down the ingredients (and believe me this was not an easy task). You'll rarely hear me say this but thank goodness for mass-market grocery stores owned and opened by German and Austrian corporations.

The result!  Two platters of home-made sushi!  The only thing missing?  Quality raw fish - as a beginner I didn't want to venture down the road of raw fish preparations and the such.

It was received with curiosity, but after a few bites I think it went over quite well with our Croatians here.

Success!

First stop when back on the West Coast....our favourite sushi restaurant....or maybe all you can eat sushi....oh oh.
