The Days of Emperor Diocletian
Did
you know? The still-preserved old town of Split, in the southern
Croatian province of Dalmatia, is 1700 years old and its first tenant?
The Emperor Diocletian himself! Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus.
A popular theory suggests that he was actually born in the antique
town of Salona, today named Solin, just 5 km from the heart of Split.
Today this beautiful and modern town of Split is one of Croatia's most
popular tourist destination drawing in travelers from all around the
world.
In
honour of this long & historic culture, each year the city of Split
celebrates the traditions of the days of Emperor Diocletian. During
these 5 days of celebrations, people dress in traditional toga wear and
partake in the festivities in the walls of the palace Diocletian had
built during his reign in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD. What
an incredible experience walking through the palace, dressed in a toga,
sipping on some wine from a goblet surrounded by actors re-enacting a
typical day in the very spot you stand that was the norm over 1,700
years ago.
Amazing.
